A rip in the planar barrier between the prime and the demiplane of Nightmare, the Nightmare Vortex is a terrible obstacle in encounter. The demiplane of Nightmare draws creatures to it either by force of its necrotic energies or by influencing the dreams of its victims.

Hazard:
The portal actives when triggered. Thereafter, it attacks every round on its initiative.
Perception:
DC 28: The character detects the portal before moving within 6 squares of it.
Additional Skills: Arcane or Religion
DC 24: The character recognizes the danger of the portal.
Initiative: +3
Trigger:
The portal rolls initiative when one or more creatures move within 6 squares of it.
Attack:
Standard Action: Close Burst 3
Targets: Creatures in burst
Attack: +16 vs. Reflex
Hit: 3d8+4 psychic and necrotic damage and make a secondary attack.
Secondary Attack: +14 vs. Fortitude
Hit: Ongoing 5 psychic and necrotic damage and the target is blinded (save ends both).
Miss: Half damage.
Countermeasure:
♦ A character in the burst can minimize the damage of the portal with a DC 28 Acrobatics check made as an immediate interrupt before the portals attack. With a successful check, the character takes half damage if the portal hits and no damage it is misses.
♦ To close the portal requires an Arcana or Religion check as a standard action vs. DC 28. The skill challenge is Complexity 2.
